Who's really in control? Me or God? Or BOTH??
I had an amazing conversation last night with my partner. I’ve been reading Wayne Dyer’s latest book called “Excuses BEGONE!” I had a wonderful reminder of something that is probably my biggest weakness. I am pretty ambitious, hard working, and I know what I want. I am the kind of person who gets things done, or at least started. I find myself constantly reaching for a goal, and wanting it to happen on my schedule. Well, sometimes my goals don’t happen on my time. What I learned or was reminded yesterday was that if I truly believe that God or The Universe or Buddha (replace with whatever you believe) is a friendly, supportive force bringing into your life exactly what you need to get you where you need to go, then there is no need for “time” based on MY schedule. Right? Does that make sense? So I believe we attract everything into our lives. If something comes into my life that is not exactly what I planned, it’s all part of what I need to get me on my path to where I want to go.
I was telling my partner all this yesterday, and he had definite opinions(as always). He grew up as a youth pastor, and very involved with the church. He posed the question: “What if God has other plans for you?” I was sitting there with my mouth kind of opening and closing not sure of what to say next. That threw me for a loop. I think for the controlling part of my personality, I want to believe that I create my own agenda. I have goals, directions, and the universe supports my passions and my primary habitual thoughts. The idea that God says, “I know you want this, but you’re going to have this instead” or “I know you are trying for this, but I’m not going to let it happen” is difficult to understand. But when things come into my life, regardless of whether or not I believe god is taunting me, or providing my desires, it’s important for me to accept what is right in front of me. My partner said that is the essential definition of happiness, to be able to accept what life/God gives you and adapt. Everything happens, but how we react to what happens is the key to happiness.

CONTROLLING BEHAVIOR is Public Enemy Number One

I agree. We only truly have control of our own actions. All the rest is illusion.

Hey Felipe: I’ve had to read this post a couple of times and review thenonconformer’s comments above.
We (the human race) try to see everything that occurs in life as if in human form, emotionally, psychologically, creatively, and intellectually. Even, or should I say, especially God (in whatever form we realize it). When we say, “What if God has other plans for us?” what we are doing is limiting that power (God) to the confines of human nature. If we believe that God is a Universal Force, an Energy Flow that is effected (not affected) by our own energetic choices, then why would we want to think that (God), a limited humanization of something much greater, would have a plan that limits our choices, path or success? Religion always asks us to look outside ourselves to something else for the answer that only exists inside us, each and everyone of us. Religion would not exist if all people understood this.
In Neale Donald Walsh’s books “Conversations with God” he relates the intention of God toward us, His finest creation, as rather lassez faire, hands off… we are created with all the tools neccesary to both make choices, both good and not so good, and make them with the authority of God that is within us, or essentially the core and essence of who we are in the first place.
There is nothing standing in our way from making any choice and following through with it. But all we have any right to concentrate on, if we want to be happy, filled with joy, and fulfilled, is the conditions of the present moment and how OUR heart and soul deal with the present. If we constantly compare the present condition/moment with others, there will always be those lesser and greater; with the past, there will always be regret for either then or now; or with the future, there will always be desire and the inability to be satisfied.
Esoteric, I know, but the true essence of Quantum Physics. That we are God, God is us. All action, either mental or physical, energetically affects all other things, so nothing exists but the present moment.

Mark, that is a wonderful point you make. We have to recognize and appreciate the our own divinity. I don’t particularly think that “god” has other plans for me, but my partner brought that one up as a question. Choices made in the present moment are all we add up to, and we have to make sure our choices are in line with our values. Thanks for the great, thoughtful comment.
